Wolf Creek Company founder,
Charles (Bud) Knowles, graduated from Wichita State
University with a
degree in Economics and Accounting. He entered the United States Marine
Corp receiving a commission as Second Lieutenant and served during the Korean
War.
After leaving the Marine Corp, Bud became a Special Agent with the F.B.I. and
eventually was relocated to Dayton, Ohio to lead the Dayton
office. Upon receiving his orders to relocate once again, he decided the
government lifestyle was not for him. Bud left the F.B.I. and started a
landscape company which grew into a landscape, garden center, and nursery
business.
Irrigation
installation and service was added when Toro entered the business through
their purchase of Moist-O-Matic and grew to a
substantial portion of the company. Through the years over 40 golf courses
were installed along with a long list of residential and commercial sites. In
the early 1970's agricultural irrigation services were added with the
addition of the Valley center pivot and Bauer product lines.
As the 1970's progressed, Bud sold off the various units of his company and
started the Wolf Creek Company wholesale distribution business that we are
today. Rain Bird was the first major product line with others added as the
years went by and the area of service growing from just southwest Ohio to all of Ohio,
western Pennsylvania, West
Virginia, and Kentucky.
Today Bud is retired
and his sons, Scott and Chris, operate the business. Wolf Creek
continues to grow and prosper supplying Green Industry System and Portable
Piping products. See the product sections to learn more about what we
distribute.
My father communicated a simple set of rules when I entered the business
while in high school; provide good products, treat people fair, and always do
the right thing. As we transitioned from Buds
entrepreneurial vision to a second generation distribution organization, we
still follow those simple dictates.
We have been and
intend to remain a distributor that provides the best value for our
customers. Not resting on past accomplishment, we are dedicated to becoming a
better supplier every day. We always work to help our customers become
more efficient, effective, and profitable. Long have we said that our
success will depend on that of our customers.
We must be delivering on that idea.
Yes, we have ideas to grow our company however, we
do not undertake growth until we are satisfied our core business is and will
remain sound. We will not deteriorate the service we provide that many
have come to rely upon. In an age when the ownership of most
distributors is insolated from the customer by layers of staff, I still value
personally meeting with our customers.
I worked install
crews, ran install crews, did service work, did the sales work, and did the
design work like all contractors we work with do. But I'm not
unique. Our company is populated by people with as much or more field
experience than I. This forms the most striking difference between us
and our competition.
We are well aware that when our customers ask for product they need it.
While not perfect, we continue to hold a higher order fill rate than our
competition. It's our job to be the distributor so we do not ram buying
or stock programs down our customers throats.
Because we understand what our customers are facing you will find us in the
field everyday. Our level of on the job support far exceeds the
norm. Which harkens back to our motto that our
success depends on that of our customers. Unlike the typical
supplier who doesn't care if their customers are successful as long as they
pay their bills.
Our Green Industry
business offers a tremendous amount of training. In the winter we hold
several classes in all our major markets and during the summer we provide
field installation training days. Since we want our customers to
prosper, such training is part of the relationship. In this way, the
health of our industry can be protected and grown. We're not here just
to harvest profits, but responsibly grow the industry.
It's a way of doing business. That's all. I hope that if you are
not a customer you will consider doing business with us. If you are a
customer, we are absolutely thankful you choose to work with us and promise
to be a better distributor everyday.
