Too often do we have to post online and put up newspaper ads in efforts to hire someone new. Sometimes, folks might even get desperate hiring someone they aren’t completely sure about. If it’s busy season and you need workers, the risk is necessary. But, what if there was an option you haven’t even tapped into?

Finding good workers might be hard. But, hiring interns or an apprentice can defiantly make things easier. Apprenticeships offer young people interested, or pursuing a career in landscaping, a way to get experience in the business. If you want good workers later on, someone has to help develop them now.

On the financial side, hiring an intern or apprentice typically means they can work for less. Because they have less experience and less personal financial responsibilities they can be paid at a lower wage. Young people are more willing to work for less. They will have a better attitude about doing the same as someone older who is making more.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the national median hourly wage for landscaping and grounds keeping workers is $12.03. Although, in our area averages are slightly higher at around $15.00 an hour. Our industry is growing, so wages continue to raise as profits and business do. With an annual industry growth rate of 3.9%, the need for workers is needed more and more.

Green Growth

The interest in the Green Industry is growing for a reason. Because of the demand for work and the growth of the industry, wages are on the rise and people are advancing more quickly. The Green Industry offers interesting work that is easy to get into. Not only interesting, the work is also satisfying and healthy.

Creating a career in a green field is healthy for the body, mind and environment. Landscaping and grounds keeping workers do work that benefits others and the world we live in. It is about time that people caught on to the good work we do.

Initially most new recruits will require some training. Although that may take some time, they will learn by doing, as well as through observation. In addition, we also hold on site courses during the winter months each year.

Schools are beginning to identify the need for labor workers. Colleges as big as Ohio State University to as small as Clark State are starting programs for our industry. Interns may be found at a college near you. So hire some interns or apprentices! Not only will it make the job search easier, but also make hiring more affordable.
